Unto You, Part 5: God’s Angels
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow
Before there were people on earth there were angels in the heavens. They are the great heavenly host. While we live in a physical world, angels live in a spiritual world. They are creations of God sent to do His service, and to minister to us in unique ways. Everything they do is according to the plan of God, and everything is for the glory of God. Angels appear throughout the Bible with various names, in various ways, with various forms, at various times, and for various purposes. They announce God’s plans, carry out His purposes, and provide protection for God’s people.
The angels of God witnessed many things throughout the history of the world, and even stepped into our world to speak and do God’s will. But nothing that they witnessed compared to the unveiling of God’s redemptive plan. They looked upon it in wonder, they rejoiced in it with jubilation. When God the Father set His plan in motion, an angel was there to instruct Mary and Joseph so that they could understand what God was doing. When they wondered what to name Him, an angel was there to give the name to them. When the Son of God became a man, the angels were there to lead a heavenly celebration and give specific instructions to the baby’s first visitors. When the young child’s life was in danger, an angel was there to instruct Joseph to take the child to Egypt. When Jesus fasted for forty days and was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, the angels were there to minister to Him. When Jesus cried out in Gethsemane, “Not My will but Thine be done,” an angel was there to strengthen Him. When Jesus was betrayed and arrested, thousands of angels were ready to deliver Him if He had given them the order. When Jesus rose from the dead, angels were at the empty tomb to make the first announcement that He lives. When Jesus ascended into heaven, angels were there to reveal that He would come again.
What a joy and comfort it is to realize that the angels of God that did His will in Bible times, are still doing His will today. Just as the angels ministered to Jesus, so they minister to God’s people today. They have not gone out of business or been put into retirement. You do not have to earn their ministry, for their ministry is a part of your inheritance as a child of God. You may never notice them or be aware of their presence, but they are here, faithfully caring out the will of God on your behalf. And they will continue to do so until that glorious day when they will return with Him, and we will be caught up together to be forever with the Lord.
You alone are the LORD. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the angels of heaven worship you (Nehemiah 9:6 NLT).
Praise the LORD, you angels, you mighty ones who carry out his plans, listening for each of his commands (Psalm 103:20 NLT).
